A compromised smart device is a network-connected home appliance — lighting, a plug, a thermostat, a household appliance, a toy — that a third party has taken control of, usually through a factory-set credential or an unpatched software flaw.
How it works
These devices are sold cheaply, designed to be simple to set up, and rarely updated after purchase — sometimes not at all once the model is discontinued. Many share the same factory admin credential across an entire product line, information that is public since it appears in the manual. The device itself stays powered on permanently and connected to the same network as the computer and the phone. What makes it a target isn't its own value — nobody wants your light bulbs — but its position: it offers a foothold inside the home network, and computing capacity that can be mobilized remotely as part of a fleet of enslaved devices.

How to verify
Open your box or router's interface and look at the list of connected devices: it should match what you actually own. For each device, check that the factory password has been changed and that the firmware is up to date.
What to do
Change the factory password as soon as you install the device, enable automatic updates where available, and don't expose the device directly to the internet. If your box allows it, put these devices on a guest network, separate from your computers and phones — this is the measure that best limits the consequences.
If it already happened
Disconnect the device from the network, reset it, update it and change its password before reconnecting it. Then check the other devices in the home and the router itself, whose configuration may have been changed.
